There’s a new virus on the loose that’s been linked to lots of laughs and good times on Broadway. It’s causing theater-lovers everywhere to incessantly hum the tunes of their favorite shows and has sparked incredible word-of-mouth buzz. Warning: watch out for Viral Marketing in the form of Interactivity on the web. The hottest, hippest shows are using MySpace, Facebook and YouTube to promote their productions and it’s as catchy as ever! Through song widgets, blogs, and even parody videos, Broadway shows are appealing to audiences with a fresh spotlight. Prime example? The song “Abuela” created by Lin Manuel Miranda, based on Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella.” Miranda has posted 16 videos on YouTube for his show. He’s said that fans have told him they’ve traveled to NYC to see In the Heights because of his addictive online videos.
