Riding the Volunteering Wave

Riding the Volunteering Wave

Stage right. In every aspect of those words, we’re reporting on the important trend of volunteerism. Samantha Rizzuto, crowned Miss Pre-Teen National Sweetheart 2010, talked to gendance about her donation program. If you enjoyed The Sparkle Effect, you’re gonna love this bike tale.

Samantha’s most recent venture, Micah’s Bike, got our wheels spinning (literally). “Micah, a boy from my church, inspired me to pursue this project. His parents wanted to get him a bicycle to enjoy, but they didn’t have the money to purchase one.”

Micah needed more than just any old bike. “Micah’s Bike raises money to help special needs families purchase therapeutic bicycles, which cost thousands of dollars because they involve individual accommodations needed for each child. Therapeutic bicycles give them the opportunity to enjoy a physical activity like other kids.”

Samantha told us that special needs bicycles mean more than fun; they also improve coordination, endurance and cardiovascular fitness and strength, which come in handy during therapy sessions for kids with disabilities. “These kids are often excluded from social activities. By having their own bicycle, they feel a sense of independence and greater self-esteem,” says Samantha.

Taking matters into her own hands, this caring young woman sold candy at various community events, hosted a walk-a-thon and wrapped books at her school. Micah, along with four other children, all received special bicycles from Samantha’s heartfelt efforts.

The young trendsetter’s volunteer ride doesn’t stop there. Not only does she implement local community events, she also participates with national organizations like the Macy’s Believe campaign and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She’s also planning on hand-delivering cards to veteran hospitals to deliver for Valentine’s Day.

We’ll leave you with this true sweetheart’s wise words: “My friend once said that volunteering is the rent we pay for living. I believe that if it’s in my means to help another person, I not only should, but I will. I encourage you to look for opportunities in your community to help others. You’ll be happy you did.”

gendancers, you’re never too young to make a difference. As we enter the month of “love”, pedal your way to Micah’s Bike and keep the cycle going.
