Chet Walker the Amazing (that’s what we’re calling him) is making his gendance debut today in our celeb spotlight section. Instead of having readers write in to ask questions, we’ve contacted some of his greatest proteges to get you the scoop on what it’s like to work with Mr. Amazing. Welcome to the next gen chat with Chet and say hello to an inspirational April with our new gendance Ambassador.

A Next Gen Chat with Chet WalkerMark BurrellMeet Mark Burrell. We asked him this: Chet and his solos... They’re impeccable. What solo did he create for you and how did it affect your work? Also, while you’re at it, answer us this: Where do you think the inspiration comes from his work?

Chet created a solo for me just over 3 years ago. We reconstructed it two years ago when he added in a female group number to compliment his original creation. Chet has always said, “this is the way I see you and that is the reason I created the work the way I did.” It was an eye opening experience for me. I did not necessarily feel that this solo played to my strengths in dancing or personality. However, I later looked back at the experience and was thrilled with how it brought a more complex side to my performing. It inspired an idea that forced me to focus more on showcasing the articulation of my work. My lines were lengthened, sexuality of style was heightened, and musicality exuded through the movements. I believe Chet’s way of working is often inspired by the people that he brings into the room and the vision he wants to see them as individuals create. He has a distinctive and recognizable style of choreography while the depth, formations, and passion is very individualistic based on opposing traits that he often interlaces in his works.

Thank you, Mark, Chet and readers, if you feel the inspiration, you can always send us your questions for Mark or Chet by clicking here. Rock on
