B-GIRL, Let the Battles Begin |

|
Here at gendance, we fall head over heels for underdog stories, and the triumphs of women-prenuers (ahem, Cliche). So, let us trend you with two sisters that found their heart in creating a modern day b-girl film. Have you heard of B-GIRL? Hello. Where you been? It’s already available on DVD. Come... lets learn, from behind the camera with Elizabeth and Emily Dell. For them, meeting Lady Jules (MTV’s ABDC Beat Freaks, You Got Served, Step Up 2) was fate. They came together to learn how Jules can freestyle, topswipe, airflare and headspin. After all, the filmmaking sisters are not dancers. They’re merely addicted to b-girl dancing. We’re serious. They moved to LA, scoped the underground scene and spoke to hundreds of dancers to bring their movie dreams to life. The flick started as a short film, then won several awards after traveling to 25 film festivals worldwide. It wasn’t enough. (Yeah, girls.) So they “dared to go beyond” and made a full-length film that’s more gritty (and realistic) than former movies you know of in this genre. “I strived to make B-GIRL authentic to its core, but dance movies are fun. They let us live through the fantastic athletic ability of others and communicate emotions on a deeply physical level,” Emily Dell. During the casting process, Lady Jules, Emily and Elizabeth brought in exceptional dancers including Ivan ‘Flipz’ Velez who welds together b-boy flair and movie experience (Honey, Stomp the Yard). “There was so much experience and talent at the audition, we could’ve filmed a mini movie on the audition alone,” said Flipz. There were 5-10 pages of dialogue to get through everyday on set, and a limited budget, so they shot in actual homes, warehouses and clubs. In the end, B-GIRL came together to bring us from Brooklyn to LA from a b-girl’s perspective and to inspire us to believe in ourselves. (It’s the gendance way, but of course.) Got a question for these filmmakers? If so, get your motivated-self to www.bgirlmovie.com and ask away at info@bgirlmovie.com. Follow the trend. See the movie and scissor-kick towards the reality of your dreams. |
