Behind the Scenes

He was noted as being the “smiler” on the show. He’s gone viral with twitter gossip from thousands of fans galore and he’s headed to the American Idol tour. Learn what Tim Urban has to say about his amazing ride on Idol.
Behind the Scenes with Tim Urban

You have an extensive religious background. You’re home schooled, never had liquor, etc. How has this shaped you as a person and as a singer?
It’s shaped every aspect of my life. I grew up in a Christian home and those set of morals shaped me as a human being, which now is reflected in my singing career.

What were your feelings of being on www.votedfortheworst.com?
I have no comment about that website. I’m not excited about it and it’s not a site anyone should be proud of. I worked my hardest to get off of there and I’m not proud of being on there at all.

You took everything positively. It seems like the judges appreciated your personality, how do you feel about that?
That was my goal on the show. Not just to improve as an artist, but to be a good contestant and to take what they were saying and work to improve myself. I’m proud I got the recognition for it.

How did you deal with the pressure of singing to millions of people?
I tried not to think about the millions of people watching. It’s hard to connect to a camera, so I felt the audience instead. The energy was so great in the audience.

If you could turn back time, would you show America anything else?
Hmmm. There were a couple of weeks that I wasn’t sure of myself, but once I found my groove, and felt it, I kept going. I have no regrets.

There’s been suggestions that you’d be a good fit for GLEE and Disney.  What are your future plans?
I would love to pursue music and I hope that door opens up, but I’ve always had the desire to act. I would be really excited if I can act and get on any of those shows. The whole idea makes be so happy.

Everyone talked so much about your smile. Has Colgate contacted you yet?
At this point, not yet. I’d love to do that in the future, but no they haven’t yet. Good idea though.

Are you surprised by the giant support for you on twitter?
The little bit that I’ve caught is so amazing to me. Because you’re in the American Idol “bubble” you lose sight of what’s happening, but when I read all the twitter chatter, I was surprised.

There’s been intense scrutiny about your looks. It was a shocker. How did you react?
I think people find someone to just nit pick to say things about you. They find you, they don’t like you and blow things up. I don’t perform for those people at all. I only perform for the people that want me on stage. I didn’t really expect what was said to be as big as it was. It blew up really fast. I took it in stride. It was just one of the stories someone decided to run with. It maybe could have helped, but in a way, I hope people didn’t take it seriously.

Thinking back to the way beginning, did you have any vision of where you wanted to end up?
Honestly, when I auditioned, I never thought I’d make it past the stadium. I was thinking they’d send me away. I didn’t have a grand picture, but as of today, this experience has totally blown me away. I got through Hollywood week, and then I got sent home, but they called me back. It was really truly crazy.

What motivates you in life and in music?
The desire to impact other people in a positive way. That’s why I have the happy outlook in life. I try to be a very encouraging person. I want that to show. I want people to be really encouraged. That’s the whole reason I play music. I want to put a smile on their face.

What was your mindset on last night’s show?
I went back and watched my performance from Tuesday night... and I decided that if I did go home, I wouldn’t be upset about the performance. I was excited and proud of how far I’d gotten. Being a part of Idol Gives Back, lightened the blow a little bit.

How do you feel about your stage presence/dancing on the show?
Well, that one night, I totally did that slide. I thought about it, slid during the rehearsals, and the stage manager said I should do it on the live show. So I did. I haven’t worked with a choreographer yet, but I’ve done some theatre productions so that helped where you have to have certain expression. It’s definitely something I hope to improve upon and it’s constant a learning process.

Well, gendancers, It’s been an insane run; a crazy awesome ride. I look forward to the tour and having you see me all again real soon. Thank you for your support.
