The Muses of Dance Come to NYC

DeMa Dance Company

As founding artistic directors of DeMa Dance Company, Despina and Matina Simegiatos will pay homage to their culture next week in NYC. These performers were born to be artists. Their late father was a great entertainer, their mother, Vicky, was a ballerina with the National Opera of Greece, and their stepfather, Dimitri Kavrakos, was a renowned bass opera singer. “We grew up seeing our parents combine art and business. Our mother is now helping us progress with our vision.”

The word DeMa derives from their names, but also means “unit of strength” which portrays their presentation of athleticism. Historical pieces like “ZALOGGOS”, which tells the tragic story of Greek women captured by the Turks during the 1821 Revolution, are also integral to their mission. This piece, along with many others in the NY premiere will celebrates the individual’s power to affect the world around them.

Residing in both Brooklyn and Athens, Despina and Matina grew up with the fusion of traditional Greek and contemporary American culture. Which is why they brought SYTYCD’s Sonya Tayeh on board for the premiere. “Sonya’s work is physically dynamic, yet very musical, combining jazz, modern and contemporary, which adheres to our vision of making dance accessible to a wide audience.”

Don’t miss choreographer, Yesid Lopez of Ballet Hispanico and the acclaimed TOKYO, too. Watch rehearsal footage here. Forget tickets to Greece, get your tickets for their show next week.
