Behind the Scenes

Go ahead, brag a lil’.  Tell our readers who you’ve worked with.  Inspire us.
JLo, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears in all of her Pepsi Commercials, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Spice Girls, Will Smith, Macy Gray. I also worked with Michael Jackson.

GEOSick. You’re the man GEO.  Speaking of that, how did you go from George to GEO?
Working as an M.C. for events, one of my friends used the name, “MC GEORGE” but it didn’t sound cool enough, so he named me GEO. I never thought it would stick but I began to like the sound of it. It became a stage name and helped me develop my dancer persona. George was the reserved quite guy, GEO became my alter-ego. GEO lets go and expresses himself through dance and music. Sounds funny but its true!

Is it true that you shot hoops with ‘NSYNC?
Yeah! We hung backstage with PINK opening for their “No Strings Attached Tour.” It was cool to be so close to those guys when they were at the height of their success during the teen pop craze.

That craze; must’ve been cool. What’s your touring vibe?
You do a concert and it's right to the tour bus and on to the next city. Travel all night and arrive at a new venue the next day and do it all over again. You live in tight quarters, play video games and laugh it up… and when you hit the stage in front of thousands of screaming fans, nothing else really matters. You’re doing what you love and getting paid!

Who inspires you?
My mentors/teachers. I’ve taken everything I’ve learned and molded it into GEO. Then there’s Barry Lather and my mom. She’s the most unselfish person I’ve ever known. Never judges, always inspires.

Do you have an embarrassing audition story for us?
I had very little tap training growing up, but I went on an audition once for a tap commercial, it was for Foldger's coffee. They were looking for the “lord of the dance” type. (definitely not my thing, LOL.) It was freestyle tap, I was horrible! I walked out smiling though. I had nothing to lose and a national commercial to gain so I figured what the heck. You never know what will arise or who you’ll meet in the process. (We actually found that very commercial Click here)

Tell us about your best audition.
I went into a small room in front of the director for a commercial. There was a 4x4 piece of wood to tap on. I introduced myself, began to do time steps and shuffles (not very well) and I stopped. The director said, “Is something wrong?” “Look, I’m not a tap dancer, can I just do what I do best?”  “Ummm ok, go ahead!” I took off my tap shoes, moved the board away and jumped into a massive hip hop freestyle. Out of breath I looked up and there was an awkward silence in the room. The director pushed back his chair, stood up and began clapping his hands. (I thought he was going to kick me out.) I booked the commercial and I free-styled alongside tap dancer extraordinaire Ardie Bryant.

How did ICON Dance Complex come about?
My family and I always dreamed of having our own dance studio. Dance is a huge part of our lives and we wanted to build a place that everyone would love. May 2006, ICON opened its doors.

Where do you find your dance news for the studio every week?  (Lol)
gendance of course. Elizabeth and Dominique are on point!

What’s your favorite dance joke?
I don’t know if it’s my favorite but it’s the only one I know: How do you make a tissue dance? Put a little “boogie” in it.

The craziest thing that’s happened at ICON has been…
Elizabeth and Dominique from gendance showed up and hung out with the ICON FAMILY! What an honor! Thank you for keeping DANCE ALIVE and SHARING IT WITH THE WORLD!

WOW. Thank YOU GEO. A true gentleman and talented performer.
