Two Ladies Expose the Up-To-The-Minute Veracity About Modern Dance |
||
|
When we interviewed Camille Suggs and Lindsay Hilscher about the latest ‘modern dance’ trends, they chuckled. “Modern dancers are purposely not in fashion. They love old clothes, mismatched colors and the 1 pant leg up, one down look.” These Mariana Bekerman Dance Company dancers told us why being avant-garde puts you ahead of the game. Suggs never did anything by the books. At the early age of 16, she applied to the Florida School of the Arts and negotiated her way in. “If I was accepted based on my dance ability, I told them I’d take night classes in order to skip a year academically.” Hilscher doesn’t put herself into a box either and gave us the inside scoop. Modern choreographers now fuse different styles like modern/ballet and modern/vogue. (We told you fusion was in.) “We have to be trained in many styles, because a choreographer might fuse them together with modern. It’s all about breaking rules.” Mariana Bekerman exposes genuine dancers like this in her performances. She’s very unpredictable. “When starting a new piece, you never know if she's going to give super silly character movements or classic flowing contemporary.” MORAL OF THE STORY: Fusion is the hot new item on the choreography menu. Try it! |
