Sami Jade Logan is a talented 12-year-old who moved from Boston to NYC to pursue her dreams. This triple threat is also launching her own clothing line. Watch out for “It Girl” coming soon. Listen in as she reveals how you can have it all if you really want it.
How old were you when you started dancing?
I was 3. I was very shy and refused to dance for the first few ballet classes. I loved that tutu though. I finally worked up the courage, and then I was hooked.
We know it’s cool, but what made you wanna go to The Pulse?
I‘m a huge SYTYCD fan and the chance to take classes with those amazing choreographers was irresistible! Plus, it was in New York City, the dance capital of the world.
How did you convince your mom to move from Boston to NYC?
After The Pulse, the Big Apple bit me! I felt like it was my destiny. I had to be there and live there. I never obsessed about anything before. I was willing to leave the friends I had my whole life, so my mom knew I was serious. She says the “business plan” I gave her finalized the deal. She said, “Life is short. You clearly know what you want, so let’s do it!”
What’s like life at Ballet Tech?
It’s a very special place with amazing teachers. They look at 48,000 dancers from all over, and it was such a privilege to get in. The other students are just like you: a little offbeat and addicted to dance. Next year, I’m transferring to the Professional Performing Arts School so I can also study singing and musical theatre.
We love our NJ Nets Kids. What’s that like?
Incredible. Big shout out to Coach Deb. The other dancers on the team are really cool and we’re like a family. We get to dance in front of 15,000 fans. There’s electricity running through you when you perform at the games. The players and fans are so supportive. And, because Jay-Z owns part of the team, some of my favorite music artists attend. Bow Wow was there a few weeks ago!
We also love our Protégés from The Pulse. How did you snag that title?
How lucky am I? I think they look for dancers who have good technique and pick up the choreography quickly in all styles. Open classes at BDC really help with that. I focus and always try to give 200%. This crazy alter-ego personality sneaks out when I’m dancing, and when you’re having fun, it’s contagious, even to the choreographers.
Tell us more about your amazing mom.
Where do I start? My Mom raises me by herself and works so hard to give me the opportunity to dance. She’s pretty cool too. She manages my insane schedule and is so supportive of everything I do. See question 3 above … who does that?
(See Sami's amazing mom in a fav gendance issue.)
You assist with so many big names. What’s it like to work with your icons?
I know, right? It’s unreal. I went from admiring them on TV to being on stage with them. We have so much fun on tour. Dave, Shane & Cris are always laughing and joking. All the guys are big kids. Mia, Wade Robson, Tyce and Gil are so talented and inspiring. I still get nervous with Mia Michaels and Brian Friedman; I want to impress them the most, and I psych myself out sometimes. Gotta work on that!
You’re a Lucky Logan because…
My mom and I call each other the Lucky Logan girls. I’m only 12 and I’ve been blessed with so much! What’s neat is, everything has sort of come to me. Great agent, manager, vocal coach, opportunities. Mostly, I’m lucky because of my mom … she always has a positive outlook on life and I think that creates luck.
Besides dance, you love…
Chillin with my friends. Slumber parties. The beach. Acting and singing, of course. I’m cutting my demo CD this summer and I’m in a production of Hairspray here in Manhattan in August.
Well, girlfriend, you are the “It Girl”. Thanks for an inspiring interview and props to you and your mom for being so next gen.
