If you’re wondering who Tony is, listen up. Tony was Antoinette Perry’s nickname, a beautiful-but-tough actress who succeeded in producing and directing in the 1930s- which was unheard of for women at the time. The American Theatre Wing started the Tonys in 1947. However, during the first 2 years, there was no official Tony Award. (Gasp!) The winners were presented with a scroll, a cigarette lighter, and a money clip or compact. In 1949, the Medallion (seen at left), was initiated after the United Scenic Artists held a design contest. The Medallion remains to this day the official award of the Tonys. (Phew.) On Sunday, June 7th, Broadway’s best gathered at Radio City Music Hall; some of them got gussied up a few nights before at the American Theatre Wing gala. Not only did today’s celebs take home gorgeous awards, but they were bestowed with swag bags including the beloved shoes of the legendary Phil LaDuca. Cheers to the Manolos of dance!
