She’s Absolutely Stunning

Shantala

Ok dancers, when you think of Brooklyn, what do you see?  How about the Brooklyn Bridge?  Its beauty, strength, and sheer presence conjure up an image you can’t forget. Just as unforgettable is Shantala, who’s appearing at BAM this week to showcase her Indian dance expertise.  Shantala brings American and Indian cultures together, using the art of dance to “give an expression of togetherness and positive energy… I always hope that that counters the things that divide us,” as quoted in the New York Times.  She’s a connector, just like that famous bridge.

Born in India and raised in France by her dancer mother, Shantala mastered Kuchipudi, a Southern Indian dance form.  She was determined to expose her art to a Western audience, and today, she is a world-renowned performer.  Inspired by Pina Bausch’s travels to India, “Bamboo Blues” flaunts Shantala’s talent to give new meaning to culture appreciation.

Moral of the story: Dance dissolves cultural boundaries. Start walking over some bridges.

Take the 2,3 train to BAM.  There’s only 1 day left to see Shantala.  BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, 30 Lafayette Avenue, at Ashland Place, Fort Greene, Brooklyn; (718) 636-4100, www.bam.org.
