You’ve seen it at posh parties, imaginative performances and maybe at a few cool trade shows. Body painting catches the eye, and not just because it’s physically stunning. Sports Illustrated recently published a 156-page magazine praising the body painting art form. Body paint artist Marcela Murad publishes Face and Body Art International Magazine and produces the Face and Body Art International Convention. She’s thrilled that America is finally catching on to this trend; it’s been a popular and recognized art form in Europe and other countries. Since the human body becomes the canvas, body paint artists have seen it all (literally). So, it’s essential for artists and models to have a common understanding of comfort level and personal boundaries. Body paint modeling also builds confidence and let’s people open up. No streaking allowed, though. Privacy is key, so models go public only after being completely finished. Many dancers are turning to body art for personal expression. Marcela’s coolest job? A show called “Bodies Alive”. 50 artists painted all day so that 40 dancers from the Nao Dance Company (Orlando) could perform completely covered in pigment. However, the body art is what propelled the show’s concept. The Nao dancers were given sketches of the black and white geometric designs they would be painted in, and learned about the tribal culture that inspired them, so they could choreograph to empower the art. Marcela also did a calendar shoot for the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders at Forge, a famous restaurant in Miami. They too loved the body paint scheme, and so did everyone involved. Now that’s team spirit. So what do you get when you combine a beautiful dance model and an unusual art form? A talking, living billboard. It’s continuous promotion because people always want a photo op with a body art model. (Guaranteed circulation!) While body painting is certainly a colorful addition to anyone’s wardrobe, its artistry adds unparalleled excitement to any event. Living works of art…an exhibit you don’t want to miss.
