Want More Savvy? You got it.
The “Wannabe’s” Interview Continues below.
Mariah
What do the words “next generation” mean to you?
Inspiration. We ARE the next gen growing up to be 18... getting the opportunity to start making choices and affect the world, as well as be affected. We are inspired by the people that we’re looking up to right now-by stars, political parties, adults, even other kids; but at the same time, we have to keep a good reputation because we’re responsible for inspiring the next generation below us and for being good role models... we are the ones being inspired and inspiring others. That’s so next gen.
I hear that each episode will end with a savvy music video, that means you have 26 music videos... how did you do it?
We haven’t completed all 26 songs or music videos, but we’re going to. We’ve done a lot of episodes where we would do 4-5 music videos. But lately, we shoot in 3 days and and now we shoot a whole video on Fridays.
Andrew
Now that you’re climbing your way up the ladder, what celeb do you want to meet and why?
My favorite band is Dave Matthews Band. I love them so much. I’d love to meet Dave Matthews himself. I’d love to know what his songs mean to him. We met Nick Jonas and that was amazing, too.
Did you go to dancing school when you were younger? What’s your favorite genre to dance?
I never went to a performing arts school. I took dance classes here and there and my favorite is hip hop. I’ve been doing hip hop since age 7 or 8.
Being the star of a pop group, you’re most likely going to learn lots of dancing. In addition to your songs, have you worked with any choreographers yet? If so, who and if not, who would you want to work with?
We’ve worked with Bradley Johnson. He choreographed our “I Wanna Dance” video. But, we really want to work with So Real Crew based out of Houston, Texas.
Besides performing, what do you like to do on the side?
My hobbies right now include sleeping because we don’t get a lot of sleep. I also like going out and seeing the city and shopping at the mall.
Sarah
What are rehearsals like?
On Mondays, we go to the school at 9am, we’ll have a table read and we’ll block all scenes. Tuesdays through Thursdays, we film and then maybe a video on Friday. Saturdays we have school and Sundays we’re OFF!
What’s your favorite part about performing in a cafe on the show?
I just love all the colors in the cafe, it’s really cool. The stage is so awesome. Being 13, this is the biggest opportunity that’s come my way. I was 7 when I started in the group. Now I’m 13 and I have a career; it’s really cool.
Drew
What dancers inspire you?
Barishnikov... being trained under the influence of ballet, he was an inspiration to me. He always worked hard. His story is very interesting. Since I was young, I’ve trained under Cris Judd and Eddie Garcia... (Cris, Co Dance) (Eddi, Michael Jackson’s Bad) The circle of life in dance is unbelievable.
Did you dance on the competition circuit?
Yep with LA Dance Magic, Co Dance and a few others. I started at 7 and I went till I was about 13 and 14.
How does the dance background help you on stage?
It helps me big time on stage and on set. When you’re performing, there’s a mentality and discipline of the performance. You have to tell the story without having to speak... whether people understand that story, you show it through your emotions. With our jobs, you actually get to sing how you feel.
Shaylen
What inspires you?
I watch Drew and Alan. They inspire me so much, and basically anything that has to do with music, my career and acting.
What did you do the moment you heard you were joining with The Jonas Group?
They’re so incredible and intelligent. I started crying. They called us into a meeting to update us on everything that was going on, and our Marketing Manager surprised us by saying, “The Jonas Group has become your new managers.” We all started crying. They had us on tape and we were all in tears. We had dinner that night and then went out.
What was the funniest moment you remember from taping the show.
There are so many. There was one episode when Andrew and I were searching for a lost hamster. We were entirely in camouflage... my face was painted and we were behind these bookshelves. During one part, the hamster was on Andrew’s head. The next scene, you see the hamster on the bookshelf and then I found the hamster in his hat. It was funny.
There was another scene with 1,000 donkey pins, a cake blew up in our face, and pretty much all of our costumes are always a funny highlight. I was attacked by kids with silly string once and we also had a food fight. We had two takes and we had to stay in the clothing for the entire day. We were covered in cake and candy, chocolate pudding, etc. I had everything in my hair including sprinkles!
Alan
What dancers inspire you?
Freestylers like So Real Crew, from ABDC, PacMan (SYTYCD).
Did you watch the debut of the show together?
The night of March 7th, we had a premiere party at our caterers restaurant. We were all very excited. I can’t even describe how good it felt to air in Australia.
We were told you’ve performed over 400 live concerts. Tell us... what does it feel like to hear that number repeated to you?
It’s crazy because we’re all so young. I started in Savvy when I was 11. To hear that number it’s amazing...
What brought you together in 2004? Tell us how it all began.
400 kids were auditioned. 20 people make call backs. At first, the group was 8 people. over the years, it dropped to 7 and now it’s 6. Once we became a group, we just clicked. We all became a family. About 2 years ago Shaylen joined the group and it’s been really nice to have her.
What inspires you?
Hanging out with the other members of our group. Once I see them work hard, it makes me want to work harder. If I’m not giving it my all, I feel like I’m letting them down. I don’t want to let them down-ever.
What do you do in your spare time?
We have a studio at the school on part of the set. We have a whole line of mirrors set up, so I hook up my iPod and start free-styling. I’ve been a choreographer since about April of 2009.
What was the moment, you knew you were a choreographer? I started choreographing some of the steps for the group. I helped our choreographer with the “Ready to Go” video. I also helped on “I Wanna Dance” as well. Prior to that, I worked at at a dance studio as an instructor. When we got called to do the TV show, I left. You have to start somewhere...
